Department of IR, Airlangga University, Indonesia

Department of International Relations (IR) Faculty of Social and Political Sciences Universitas Airlangga since the late 1990s has developed interdisciplinary and intersection globalization studies. In the intersection position, IR is explicitly no longer a branch of Political Science but the intersection of social science studying international affairs, especially in the three principal disciplines: politics, law and international economics. In interdisciplinary position, the Department of International Relations, FISIP Universitas Airlangga sees HI as collaborative social sciences studies with global paradigm.

In the view, as described above, the approach taken by the Department of IR FISIP Universitas Airlangga was combining “science” and “art”. Although they often overlap in the scope of the study, IR as “science” and “art” have fundamental differences. As the “science” HI is oriented to the development of at least an understanding of the basic concepts and general analytical framework needed to interpret and explain everyday phenomena of international relations. While for the “art”, IR was developed not only to analyze but also to cover areas that need certain abilities and skills that are special in international relations such as negotiation, managerial and communication.
